With most current E-mail software you can send files to anyone through e-mail by simply attaching them. While it is technically feasible to do this with almost any file, it is not a good practice as your file attachment will take up valuable bandwidth as it is passed from router to router on way to its destination and may get bounced around a bit if the destination e-mail server is busy. In fact many ISPs put a limit on the file size that you can send via e-mail. Worse, our clients rely on fast support which is requested and administered primarily via e-mail and if our e-mail client software is busy downloading a large file it prevents us from offering the responsive service our clients have come to expect. However if you want to send us files that collectively are less than 200KB please feel free to do so by e-mail. Otherwise we ask that you use our FTP server for uploads. Be sure when you make an attachment to an e-mail message that you use the correct file name extension so that when it arrives we know what program to open the file up with. (i.e. filename.jpg, filename.doc, filename.xls, etc.)
There are two ways to upload files to Ashton ITC's FTP server using FTP client software. The first is the preferred method, however if you are in a rush to get materials to us you can always use the second which uses anonymous FTP. Just be sure to e-mail us and tell us that you have uploaded data.
To set up your FTP client enter the following:
Once logged on, you will automatically be placed in the private directory assigned to you.
By using anonymous FTP you can upload files to a special directory we have prepared on our server called "incoming" for uploads only.To upload using Anonymous FTP set the following parameters:
Remember this method is for uploads to us only. Please notify us right away by e-mail that you have uploaded data to the incoming FTP directory.
Just as above, you can upload files to your own server or directory at any time with FTP software. If you have the need to do this, please contact support@ashtonitc.com and request a logon ID and password for access. Also, if you are one of our Corporate or Enterprise Virtual Server (not shared server) clients and would like to give YOUR clients temporary access to your server for restricted directory uploading/downloading purposes only, let us know and we can set it up. Try to give us 24 hour advance notification and make your request via e-mail.
Keep in mind the storage space limitation (shown below) of your virtual or shared
server option. Additional space used will be billed at $1.00 per mb per month:
Enterprise Server 500mb
Corporate Server 200mb
Basic Server 70mb
Shared Server 5mb
Normally entry to your server through FTP will be directly into the directory that stores your html files for your web pages. Under normal convention images are stored in a subdirectory to this level. If Ashton ITC has developed your site we have probably followed this convention unless your site is very small (few pages) and so you will find your images in the images subdirectory.
